A Beautiful Town Harsil

Harsil a beautiful village or small town situated at a distance of 73km (approx.) from Uttarkashi on the main highway to Gangotri at an elevation of 2623 meters, it’s on the bank of Bhagirathi river. Harsil is famous for delicious apples, kidney beans and beautiful landscapes.  Harsil is also a base camp for some trekking routes such as Dayara Bugyal, Dodi Taal, Gaumukh, Tapovan. Harsil is the place where idol of goddess Ganga (river) lives for the winter season, she get moved from Gangotri.

Harsil was once home to Raja or Pahadi Wilson, a legendary character in Garhwal, mention his  name there, and stories starts pouring about him. His real name was Frederick Wilson. He was “native” of Lancashire, England. he got attracted by the  beauty of the mountains.  And then he settled down in what is now called “Wilson Hut”, this hut is  actually a magnificent bungalow, a harmonious blend of stone and wood. He also married a local girl  Gulabi when settled down.

As story says he built most  famous suspension bridge over the Jadhganga at the  stupendous gorge of Bhaironghati — over 1,200 ft off the valley floor which made possible to cross from bhiaroghati and reach at Lanka and then ultimately to Gangotri. Thus traveling between Hursil and the holy shrine at Gangotri became possible.

How to Reach
By Air: Airport - Jolly Grant, Dehradun
By Rail: Nearest railway station is Rishikesh
By Road: Harsil is well connected by road from Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Uttarkashi and other major towns of the state and region. From Uttarkashi Harsil is about 73 km and Garhwal mandal vikas nigam’s buses and private taxis are easily available from there.

    Sach bataun….main jahan bhi uttar kashi aur gangotri ka name padh ya sunkar hi khinchi chali aati hun. Actually utarkashi se meri ek college frend thee jo mujhe kafi piccs dikhati rahti thee aur gangotri dekhne ki abhilasha to bachpan se hai….itna padh rakha hai uske bare mein ki bus ab dekhna banki hai. mummy ne to ek gana bhi sunaya hai….jo shantikunj se related hai-

    Bhagarathi to gaye kintu ganga uski gun gati hai
    aaj swayang gayatri mata guruwar tumhe bulati hai….
    yaad aapki aati hai……

    ye song hamare parampujya gurudev Shree Ram sharma acharyaji ke liye likhi gayi hai.
