Sumitra Nanadan Pant was born in the year 1900 at beautiful hill station called Kausani near almora, in the hills of Kumaon. His mother died within a few hours of his birth. He was given the name Gosain Dutt. He did not like his name so later he changed his name and called himself “Sumitra nandan Pant”.

His initial schooling took place in Almora. In 1918 he moved to kashi and started studying in queens college. After matriculation he moved to Allahabad for further study. On hearing Mahatma Gandhi’s call for Satyagraha, he left college. However, he continued his education by reading English, Sanskrit and Bengali literature. After some time, he went to Sri Aurobindo’s ashram at Pondicherry.

He started writing poem at the age of 7, anyone can easily see the  echo of the beauty of nature in his works and his poems.  Apart from Chhayavaadi poems, Pant also wrote progressive, philosophical (influenced by Sri Aurobindo), socialist and humanist poems.

Pant received Jnanpith Award for collection of his most famous poems, titled Chidambara. He was awarded Nehru Peace Prize by Soviet Union for Lokayatan. He died at the age of 77 in 1977. Pantji’s childhood house in Kausani has been converted into a museum. This museum displays his daily use articles, drafts of his poems, letters, his awards etc.

“अगुंठिता” से -
वह कैसी थी,
अब न बता पाऊंगा
वह जैसी थी।

प्रथम प्रणय की आंखों से था उसको देखा,
यौवन उदय, प्रणय की थी वह प्रथम सुनहरी रेखा।

ऊषा का अवगुंठन पहने,
क्या जाने खग पिक के कहने,
मौन मुकुल सी, मृदु अंगों में,
मधु ऋतु बंदी कर लाई थी।
स्वप्नों का सौंदर्य, कल्पना का माधुर्य
हृदय में भर आई थी।

वह कैसी थी,
वह न कथा गाऊंगा
वह जैसी थी।

राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गाँधी को समर्पित कविताओं के संकलन से - “बापू के प्रति”
तुम मांस हीन, तुम रक्तहीन,
हे अस्थिशेष! तुम अस्थिहीन,
तुम शुद्ध बुद्ध आत्मा केवल,
हे चिर पुराण, हे चिर नवीन!
तुम पूर्ण इकाई जीवन की,
जिसमें असार भव शून्य लीन,
आधार अमर! होगी जिस पर
भावी की संस्कृति समासीन!

और आगे एक जगह लिखते हैं -
शसहयोग सीखा शासित जन को
शासन का दुर्वह हरा भार,
होकर निरस्त्र, सत्याग्रह से
रोका मिथ्या का बल प्रहार,
बहु भेद विग्रहों में खोई
ली जीर्ण जाति क्षय से उबार…

“बंसत” के बारे में पंतजी लिखते हैं -
चंचल पग दीपशिखा के धर
गृह मग वन से आया बंसत।
सुलगा फागुन का सूनापन
सौन्दर्य शिखाओं में अनंत।

इसी में आगे कहते हैं -
पल्लव पल्लव में नवल रूधिर
पत्तों में मांसल रंग खिला
आया नीली पीली लौ से
पुष्पों के चित्रित दीप जला।

अंत में -
कलि के पलकों में मिलन स्वप्न
अलि कें अंतर में प्रणय गान
लेकर आया प्रेमी बंसत
आकुल जड़-चेतनस्नेह प्राण।

“उत्तरा” से -
मैं चिर श्रद्धा लेकर आई
वह साध बनी प्रिय परिचय में,
मैं भक्ति हृदय में भर लाई,
वह प्रीति बनी उर परिणय में।

जिज्ञासा से था आकुल मन
वह मिटी, हुई कब तन्मय मैं,
विश्वास माँगती थी प्रतिक्षण
आधार पा गई निश्चय में !

प्राणों की तृष्णा हुई लीन
स्वप्नों के गोपन संचय में
संशय भय मोह विषाद हीन
लज्जा करुणा में निर्भय मैं !

लज्जा जाने कब बनी मान,
अधिकार मिला कब अनुनय में
पूजन आराधन बने गान
कैसे, कब? करती विस्मय मैं !
