Jagwal - First Garhwali Movie

Uttarakhand’s films era started with the First Garhwali film - Jagwal, released in 1986 and it was the brain child of Parashar Gaur. “Jagwal” means long wait and it released on 4th of may 1983 at Mavalankar Auditorium at Rafi Marg in New Delhi.

Jagwal is tale of a young woman Indu, at her wedding the bridegroom’s youngest brother who was a dumb, get involved in a quarrel with priest. The bridegroom Biru then intervenes but in the process the priest accidentally received some fatal injuries. Later on the nuptial night police arrest the Biru and he get imprisoned for 10 years. Before Image leaving, Biru advises his wife not to wait for him and get married with his younger brother Sheru. But she choose to wait and thus the name Jagwal. After facing hardships she emerges triumphant and the “JAGWAL” (wait) ends on a happy note when she finally meets with her husband again.

Parashar Gaur went to Bombay with just Rs. 5000 in his pocket to hire a crew. He picked up the cast from Garhwali theatre in Delhi. Because none of his artists ever faced camera so it was obvious to have lots of precious footage wasted in result. However Jagwal the film was shot on location in 22 days and total cost of the production came approx. 8.5 lakhs.

This film was invited in Film Festival of India and in U.P. Chal-Chitra Nigam Festival as well. The film also had been telecast by Doordarshan, One of the World’s largest Government based T.V. station. Now-a-days Parashar Gaur lives in Toronto, ontario Canada.
